“Magayon” is a visual storytelling project based on the Filipino legend Alamat ng Bulkang Mayon. Developed as a grant proposal, it explores a reinterpretation of the story through a contemporary, illustrated comic format.
The narrative follows a simple romance between two childhood friends, disrupted by the arrival of a third figure, creating a layered story of love, conflict, and tragedy . Told from the perspective of Magayon herself, the story begins with her childhood encounter with Ulap and builds toward a dramatic and inevitable conclusion.
The project is designed as a 50 to 75-page colored comic in Tagalog, combining narrative development, character design, and environmental storytelling . Through visual sequences, the work explores themes of love, obsession, and fate, while remaining grounded in Filipino cultural identity.
This proposal represents an early stage of the project, focusing on concept, direction, and visual development. It reflects my ongoing interest in creating culturally rooted stories through illustration and sequential art.
